A mí me pareció propio.

Gracias viejo.

Fey's Lemons

About five years ago, while living in the state of Florida in the US, my parents decided to make some changes in the backyard of their house. Among these changes was the sowing of seeds of both fruits and vegetables.

It did not seem like a supernatural or strange thing, but it would solve the dilemma of the desire for change between them, and the excuse of having to go outside for the care and treatment of these little plants that would soon be.

In any case, the idea of producing food that the earth gives us is not only healthy, but also alleviates the risks of scarcity that natural phenomena can sometimes bring. More or less in that same window of time they felt, alone, the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria and the needs that it produced after its passage. Among all the seeds collected for the planting process, there was one that Fey was very excited about. You will wonder who this individual is, and I will tell you that he was an earthly angel among us, an example of a man for me as a son. Fey was actually Rafael Cortes, my father.

He was extremely happy to have a "baby lemon tree", as he called it, for his lemonades and to give the perfect touch of flavor to that drink of Cuba Libre that he loved so much. He had already picked the perfect spot in the yard for that. And without preamble, that's how it was done. The planting was completed with an inventory that, among many, included peppers, chives, lemongrass, spinach, tomatoes and, of course, lemon.

The curious thing about this whole process was that he waited not too long and thank God for that, these fruits grew fast! They were immediately able to consume fresh spinach, juicy tomatoes and chives that were glorious in those broths that he prepared and that he enjoyed so much. The peppers shone showing how healthy they were. The lemongrass tea was delightful, however, there was one little tree in particular that, for some reason, was slow to bear fruit. This was the lemon tree.

I remember that sometimes we joked about it, and we laughed about the lack of ability of the little tree to produce. One of the points that we touched the most was the fact that this was right where the clothes were hung to dry after washing. The long and sharp thorns of this one sometimes took possession of pieces of clothing and we were afraid that they would break.

Several years passed and nothing. The magisterial and visually healthy little lemon tree manifested its virile beauty with its green leaves and its now highly regarded size. I remember that sometimes my old man flirted with the idea of pruning it, of eradicating it from the area, given its inability to bear fruit. There were several instances in which he shared that idea with me, but we never carried out the act. Then, unfortunately, Fey began to weaken.  Appointment after appointment, visit after visit to the doctor made clear the fact that his heart failure was serious.

He walked more slowly, he thought with more impetus, and tested the brain to make drastic decisions. At 5:50 PM on August 13, 2021, Fey left with the Lord. His departure was sudden. There was no fight fatigue, there was no need to battle the condition. In the blink of an eye, and while I held him in my arms, this world said goodbye to the best human being it has ever known, and who is responsible for me being among you today.

At the request of my mother, and by mutual agreement with Fey prior to the event, his ashes were taken to his hometown of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, where they would be scattered in El Chapey, a sector of the area where she grew up. It was a solemn moment where the tears of farewell were mixed with the laughter of the memories of his occurrences, and of how many crazy things he invented. Fey produced a fantastic swell as she returned to his village. The ocean seemed to celebrate the life of this man who never knew of enemies, and whom he helped so many. His impeccable life was recorded in that neighborhood that saw him transform from a humble and obedient child to a father of a family without faults.

Several hours after finishing this beautiful task, we enjoyed a coffee with the family. We shared our reactions and expressed mutual agreement that his legacy would now be carried  through us. The change of leadership was already official. Now Fey's children will be in charge of keeping him alive through our example to others in life. Something interesting happened in the middle of all that. My mother Alba, dedicated to making sure that everything was in order, noticed that the box where the remains of my old man were found was not completely empty. There was still at the bottom, although very little, part of the remains of my old man. Following such an amazing find, she notified us that she knew exactly what she was going to do with them.

We decided to follow her. With a hurried step, my mother goes directly to the trunk of the little lemon tree and with a smile molded by the touch of a tear, she throws the rest of the ashes on the trunk of the plant. It seemed fitting to me. Fey had very good ideas with that little tree. He wanted it. It was important to him. The fact that my old man rested close to his roots made sense. And it was with this act that we finally got the closure we so badly needed.

Exactly three months after these events, my mother tapped me on the shoulder while I was working in my office creating graphic arts. I was a little scared, because she had tears in her eyes. I asked her what was going on, if she was okay, and he said yes, but told me that she had to show me something. It was not just curiosity, but the need to know what was moving her so much and thousands of things went through my mind, but I will never forget what she showed me.

Alba takes me by the hand and leads me to the right-back side of the lemon tree, and there it smiled at us, with the purest green that the Creator could have ever share, the first lemon that the tree has produced in almost 5 years. Finally, and to honor its sower, the little tree blessed us with its first branches of fruit flowers and with a lemon that alone, celebrated life in a dance full of hope, perseverance and love. In a few days, the number of fruits on the tree continued to reappear to the point that we could no longer count them accurately. They were too many. And here is the miracle of life.

I don't know if the perfect fertilizer was my father's remains or if it was just an apprenticeship within the framework of our ability to understand time. It is likely that the little tree just needed more time, but if that was the case, it was not until the remains of my old man kept him company that the fruits began to greet us. My old man had an unshakable moral, emotional and spiritual uprightness that I was always impressed with. His heart, the fear of God, and his love for his family separated him from everything unstable and unpredictable in this world. I never stop thanking God for allowing me to grow up with such an exemplary human being.

Even after his departure, he continued to show us how beautiful life can be, even if we have to experience unexpected losses. I usually spend time in the workshop that he left behind, and where we shared laughter talking about politics, music and the projects still unfinished. From that workshop, I also have a clear view of his little lemon tree and the images that remained in my soul, every time I saw him walking around the tree in the search of a lemon.

With this episode I wanted to thank God for that man I called my father, for the great example he gave us. For having cared that we understood the importance of being the best we can, not only for ourselves, but for also with others. Today the view from the workshop is different. I no longer see him in the midst of the incessant search for fruit on that little tree, but I do have the blessing of touching, feeling, smelling and even kissing what I now call, Fey's lemons.

Thanks dad!
